Keep your dog on a leash at first and let it check things out. If other dogs approach, let them get to know each other while your dog is leashed. Since the other dog was in the park first, it considers the area its territory.
If dogs that approach and smell your dog prove friendly, let your dog off its leash to run for a couple minutes, continuing to monitor for signs of trouble. If all goes well, let your dog play to its content.
Basic considerations:
• Your dog should be older than 4 months.
• Your dog must be current on its vaccinations.
• Your dog must respond to your command to come.
• Watch your dog instead of reading or using your cell phone.
• Don’t give your dog a toy or treat when other dogs are nearby.
• Don’t let your dog bully another dog or be bullied.
• Don’t let your dog join a loose pack.
• If your dog is not enjoying itself, end the visit.
